is derived from the Latin mansus, dwelling, which comes from manere, to remain. by the 16th century the term meant both a dwelling and, in an ecclesiastical context, the amount of land needed to support a single family. for me it has always stood for home, the manse i reside within, and the land, the gardens that surround it, which delight my senses.
